Zadar's Venetian defensive works are today part of the UNESCO World Heritage and recall the era when the city was one of the most important fortresses of the Venetian Republic. The grandest of its gates is the Land Gate of 1543, a triumphal-arch-like entrance crowned by the winged Lion of Venice. A stroll along the walls and through the gate leads straight into the history of the old town.
