Kornati National Park covers around 89 islands, islets and reefs in the open sea south-west of Zadar – the densest archipelago in the Mediterranean. Declared a national park in 1980, it is a bare, almost treeless karst landscape that George Bernard Shaw described as a "crown of stones, tears and breath of God". Its trademark are the "crowns" (krune) – steep cliffs that drop up to about 80 metres almost vertically into the open Adriatic. The Kornati are uninhabited and reachable only by boat; most visitors arrive on organised day trips from Zadar, Biograd or the surrounding islands.
Good to know
Reachable by boat only – no ferry line, no shops, no drinking water on the islands. Entering requires a national-park ticket (usually included on organised tours). Bring sturdy shoes for the cliffs plus sun and wind protection.
